Solar Hot Water Systems

solar hot water systemsThere is huge pressure on the world to be more environmentally friendly, and there are actually numerous personal benefits to having some ‘green’ items installed in your home, one of the most common being saving money. The first thing that everyone says when they hear this is that the cost of installing these green systems negates any financial saving. This is true if you only think in the short term but definitely false if you think in the long term. The initial outlay will set you back something financially; there is no getting away from that. However, if we look at solar hot water systems as an example, within a few years the electricity savings will come into their own, and not only that but a well installed system will add dramatically to the resale value of your home.

Solar hot water systems generally work best when used for things like underfloor heating, which in itself is a more efficient way to heat a home as there is less wasted heat and the room is warmed from the floor up. Solar heating systems are also excellent ways of keeping swimming pool water warm, and can be used to power air conditioning systems and heat water – really a multitude of uses.

There are generally four main components making up solar hot water systems. These are the solar thermal collectors (more commonly known as solar panels), a fluid system which moves the stored heat from the collectors to the tank, a water tank (any form of storage chamber) and of course all the pipe work that connects them together. Getting the system installed is possibly best left to the experts. It could be installed by a DIY expert, but as you are working with water and heat generated power you do need to have a good understanding of how it all works or else there could be some serious accidents or home disasters that could be more costly than the whole system in the first place.

Have a look in the local area and see if there is a company that specializes in the installation of such a system. Ask around to determine the reputation of the company and if possible try and get three quotes from three different companies to ensure you are getting the best price. This can be harder with this sort of installation as it is rather more specialized and it maybe harder to find three companies offering the service. Remember that if you plan to install the system yourself you will need to source all the components yourself, which again could be the reason you use a professional company as they will do all that for you, which in the long run could save you the time and money you thought you would save doing it yourself. Finally, remember it is your system so ensure you understand what they plan to do and are happy with it. There are many ways it can be set up, so make sure you get the one that suits your needs best.
