Cosmetic Botox Injections (Botulinum Toxin)

Even young people can have furrows of wrinkles between the eyebrows. This often makes them look mad all the time when they simply develop the wrinkles from intensely studying something and habit. Botox is one way of relieving the deep crevices by paralyzing the muscles that create them.

The Botox injection is really an injection of botulinum toxin, known as botulism to most people. The word botulus comes from the Latin word for sausage, since the bacterium that causes botulism often grows on improperly process meat like sausage. While the thought of having botulism toxin inserted into muscles on the face isn’t very appealing. It does help relax those muscles that cause the furrows.

While the procedure is simple, a healthcare professional has to inject the Botox into your skin. They know precisely where to put the injection so that it blocks the nerve’s impulses to the muscles and stops the contractions that cause you to have that giant furrow between your brows.

Since the approval by the FDA for miniscule amounts of the Botulism toxin to remove the furrow between the brows, other cosmetic uses are now available. For instance, crow’s feet, or squint lines as some people call them, respond well to Botox treatments. Furrows in the forehead also are another imperfection that Botox can help. While the results vary from patient to patient, if you have a health care practitioner that’s administered the treatment frequently, you’ll probably have the best results.

Not all wrinkles respond to Botox treatment. Some wrinkles that simply come from the skin aging do not respond well. Wrinkles whose origin is from the overstraining of specific facial muscles often disappear within a few days. The smile lines around the mouth aren’t as responsive to Botox treatment and there are far better ways to deal with those.

While Botox is less intrusive than plastic surgery or some other forms of eliminating wrinkles, it doesn’t last forever. A single Botox treatment can last for as long as four months and then you have to have another injection.

The question on everyone’s mind is normally the risks involved with a Botox treatment and whether it’s painful. There are side effects that some people experience. Some of these include pain at the site of injection, tiredness, a dry mouth, headache, neck pain, double vision, drooping eyelids, decreased vision, swollen eyelids or dry eyes. If you’re allergic to the Botox toxin, you could potentially have more severe reactions that range from a rash to asthma symptoms. Feeling faint is also a sign of an allergic reaction to the Botox. If you do have the treatment and experience any of the problems, you should always consult your physician immediately.

Of course, that brings us to the question of whether the treatment is painful. Normally the procedure only takes about 10 minutes from your schedule. Your doctor might numb the area with a cream so you won’t feel anything. Those that have the procedure done without any anesthetic, normally feel only minimal brief discomfort.

You’ll still be able to make facial expressions after the Botox treatment but you won’t have those wrinkles by the sides of the eyes or frown-lines continuously. Your co-workers and friends may notice that you look less tired but since the wrinkles fade over a few days, they won’t be able to pinpoint why.
