The Cosmetic Application of Botox

BotoxBotox, a neurotoxic protein with the full name botulinum toxin, is one of the more common cosmetic tools available today and it’s used in a wide variety of procedures across a broad range of potential benefits and impacts. The compound itself is actually extremely toxic, however when used in the right ways and in just small doses then it can produce the positively desired effects. While safety is a concern, the cosmetic procedures that it is used for today are generally recognized as safe.

For cosmetic uses, botox is injected into a particular part of the body to help produce a specific desired result. For example, it’s injected between the eyebrows to help eliminate and temporarily improve the appearance of frown lines and wrinkles in the muscles in that area. Botox work as a muscle relaxer and therefore it can smooth out this kind of look, producing a desired cosmetic result that many individuals are interested in. This eyebrow procedure is fully FDA approved for cosmetic usages.

It works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. It is most often used on forehead lines, crow’s feet (lines around the eye) and frown lines. Wrinkles caused by sun damage and gravity will not respond to Botox.

Getting Botox takes only a few minutes and no anesthesia is required. Botox is injected with a fine needle into specific muscles with only minor discomfort. It generally takes three to seven days to take full effect and will generally last four to six months.

There are many other potential uses for botox though in the realm of cosmetics and personal appearance. For example, botox is commonly used within the lips to produce a fuller look. Injected into various parts of the face, botox can help to remove wrinkles and lines, tighten up the appearance of muscles and skin and generally make individuals look younger and more attractive. Another usage of botox is to help inhibit sweating from certain glands, and for people who are uncomfortable about how much they sweat for one reason or another this is another popular option.

While botox has been used cosmetically for approximately 20 years and is now very commonly applied and used, it still has not reached complete mainstream acceptance. As with any with cosmetic procedure, all of the concerns and possibilities need to be understood upfront before proceeding with botox. To help ensure that you do not run into any problems, make sure you tell your doctor about all of your allergies, what kinds of medications you take and any preexisting medical conditions or family histories.
